BLUE Tranquility Tasty Chicken: Natural Jerky Dog Treat -
While the BLUE site won't specifically say "this treat will calm your pet" the treat contains Chamomile and Lavender, calming herbs. The idea is that this treat is supposed to help keep your pet calm, cool, and collected.
In our experience, Leia seems to monitor my movements to a lesser extent, get's less upset when I leave the house, and just seems more relaxed when she has 1/2 of the treat. Yes, we cut them in 1/2 using kitchen sheers, but you can just tear them too, the scissors are just easier. Keep in mind, Leia is a large dog, if your dog is small, consider 4ths to start and up the "dose" as you go.
Will this replace prescription tranquillizers? Not a chance. But if you just want to take the edge off for your pup, try them out. Double check with your local store about their treat and food return policy, our PetsMart will refund your money as long as 1/2 of the treats are left, so if you try it and your pets wont eat it or it just doesn't do it for them, you can get your money back.
KONG Classic -
Whenever we have to go somewhere and Leia needs to be in her crate, she knows good things are coming. We fill her KONG with a small amount of peanut butter, milk bones, and sometimes some hot dog pieces. She sees it coming and doesn't mind as much that we are leaving (she only gets the Kong when we go out). Sometimes I freeze the peanut butter in it if I know I'll be out for a while so she can't finish the kong in the first 15 minutes. Yes, a Kong can be a little expensive, but it is worth every penny.
Furminator -
I purchased a Furminator the day before Leia came home. At the time I was praying it would work. We got it on sale for about $50 but it retails for over $60. At the time I had that icky "I really hope this works out" feeling but I carefully selected the right deShedding tool for her size and coat and checked out. Well this was by far the smartest purchase we made for her because it has saved us from pounds of hair. We picked up the Large Dog Long Hair deShedding Tool which may or may not be exactly the right tool, her individual hairs are normally just under 2 inches but it works well and Leia loves the attention during grooming. Normally one brushing yields at least tennis ball sized clump of fur, if not more. If you have a dog that sheds, try a Furminator. I comb up to once a week, (normally only light brushing with one serious all over brushing a month but every dog is different. Leia doesn't shed in massive poofs but instead loses a hair here or there all the time).
KONG Wobbler -
This was on Leia's Christmas list and my mother was kind enough to give it to her! The KONG Wobbler is weighted on the bottom (which unscrews so you can add food/treats) and dispenses food through a small hole on the side. We got the large version! The dog has to use their paws and mouth to wobble it on to the correct side and it will dispense one or two pieces of what ever you fill it with. I often put a small portion of Leia's breakfast or dinner in it and it keeps her entertained for quite some time! Leia loves it and will often check it just in case the "magic food fairy" put some more food in it.
KONG Genius Leo -
This was also on Leia's Christmas list and my mother in law was kind enough to give Leia two of them! The KONG Genius Leo can be interlocked with another Genius toy to increase the difficulty level. It took Leia quite some time to figure this one out but once she did she was thrilled. Sometimes she gives up too soon because of the difficulty level, but she does like the challenge. This is a good second tier intelligence toy. If your dog is not challenged enough by a toy like the Wobbler, the Genius Leo is a good option!
